World Literature and Composition will guide high school students as they read, enjoy, discuss, and analyze a spectrum of literary selections from worldwide authors, poets, and playwrights of various eras.
Students will learn literary terms, study the techniques authors use to communicate their messages, and discuss character, plot, setting, conflict, point of view, and theme. Literature works will include short stories and poetry, The Death of Ivan Ilych, The Cherry Orchard A Tale of Two Cities, Les Miserables, Cry, the Beloved Country, The Book Thief, and The Good Earth.
Students will practice techniques of composition such as drafting, revision, and editing as they write literary analysis essays, as well as a research paper with MLA formatting.
Each semester, students will write and revise three to four essays, depending on choice of standard or honors level, and will complete one creative project per semester.
Essays will be scored using a detailed rubric analyzing the student's accomplishments in the areas of content, organization, style, and mechanics.
